Surprisingly
this part of the assignment was not as difficult as I thought it would be. I
thought trying to express myself without being able to speak would be the
hardest thing to do. They seemed a
little bit puzzled when trying to express what they were saying probably due to
the fact that they were not able to fully understand what they were saying when
I thought I was being really clear. They completely altered their way of
communicating with me of how they normally would to adapt to the way I was
communicating with them. It was almost like we both just wanted to start laughing
because we did not know what to say or how to say it. I believe that the
culture that is able to speak verbally has more of an advantage in being able
to communicate their ideas and ways of living. Although the one that is able to
use their hands to communicate can probably express themselves more
emotionally. The speaking culture may be confused, mainly because they are not
used to that sort of communication. They do not know how to understand it
without understanding verbal language. It goes in the same situation with a
deaf human being and a person that is able to speak. Deaf people normally can
only understand sign language meaning using their hands. So someone speaking
would be no use to a person who is deaf. This is a situation that happens
constantly in our society today.
I was
not able to last the full 15 minutes without using any sort of gesture or language
when I was speaking. The most difficult thing was not being able to move my
hands because that is something I am always doing. Moving my hands is a very important
way of communicating to me. My partners in this communication experiment felt
that they were not able to fully understand what I was trying to say because I
was not able to complete what I was saying without using my hands or face.
Using signs in our language today to me is one of the most important concepts
of our language. It is what we use to express how we feel or help express something
we are trying to say or do. This experiment helps explain hour important those
signs really are and it really gives you the true meaning of them. I believe
that there are some people that have difficulty in reading body language but in
a lot of situations I think that most people understand it to the most extent. You’re
able to understand how they’re feeling, or what they’re trying to do. Body
language really shows someone’s emotions to a certain depth. Some situations you
might want your body language to be hidden in situations like when showing
fear. Maybe in a robbery or other bad situation of that nature showing your
emotions may cost you your life. Although there are many other situations that
you could hide your fear for the sake of your safety.
I also had trouble with the second part and couldn't last the full 15 minutes. This experiment really did show us how important both verbal and non verbal communication is in every aspect of our daily lives. My partner also had a very hard time understanding what I was trying to say and got impatient with me. I had trouble coming up with a situation where it would be good not to show body language, Fear during a robbery is a great example.
ReplyDeleteIntriguing comment regarding the culture speaking with their hands being able to speak more emotionally. Not sure if that is true, but it something to think about. Great discussion in this first part.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it interesting how Part B seems to be almost harder for the partner than Part A, even though you have no limitations on speech itself?
There are specific groups of people who have difficulty reading body language. Can you think of any?
The final question wasn't about not showing your emotions but about not readying body language? Are there circumstances where you might not be able to trust your interpretation on body language, where it might be better to not rely on that information?
Other than this final two points, good post.
